Laurel Park Racing Analysis — Friday, December 14, 2018, by Joe Hansen

Race 1: 6-3-2

  1. Storm Raven (6): First off the claim for Schoenthal who is hitting at 26% with that move; she has 2 efforts on the grass, but her solo dirt try is good enough in here
  2. Boom Boom Gone (3): Coming out of a common race with a few rivals in here, she showed some late interest while bumping pretty dramatically with another one down the lane; like the way she was finishing and goes the mile route again
  3. Lucky Dilly (2): Still not sure how she lost her last when she was nailed at the wire; major player

Race 2: 5-4-8

  1. Readytotapit (5): With the speed to his inside, figures to get a very good stalking trip; coming off paired top Beyers and the winner 3 back just ran 2nd in an optional claimer last week
  2. Grand River (4): Figures to get over-bet based on the Beyer 2 back when breaking his maiden sprinting here at Laurel; competition in the Lewis was too much, but this is a pretty big drop out of that race; player, but probably too short to play up top with the questionable drop
  3. No Mistake N Me (8): Took to the Laurel strip nicely last out, first off the claim and shipping in from Churchill; another one who figures to stalk from the outside

Race 3: 7-3-2

  1. Miss Jak (7): Took one start and a short freshening for Claudio to get this one going well after the barn change; she’s won her last 3 very easily; 3 year old already has 5 wins and owns the highest Beyer in the field; don’t think you’ll get the morning line but anywhere north of 2/1 presents value
  2. S W Briar Rose (3): Four year old in the best form of her career, and never runs a bad one (10/14 in the money); versatility will be a positive here
  3. What What What (2): Farrior got a look at this one at the starter 8k level last out off the claim, and put 2 works into her since that one; gets in this handicap at 116, second least in field, and has the numbers to be competitive; loves to finish 3rd (10/28).

Race 4: 4-9-1

  1. Music of Life (4): Broke her maiden nicely at Del and was aggressively spotted in the Smart Halo where she was well beaten by Congrats Gal; note that the place finisher on debut was 7 clear of 3rd
  2. You Made It (9): Beyer from debut came up very light but she won impressively and sports a steady work tab off the bench; with some speed to the inside, might set up for her
  3. Enjay’s Brass (1): well-travelled miss is the Trombetta that will take most of the money dropping in from a G3 effort; she’s clearly the main player here, but it’s a pretty sharp cutback from 1 mile to 5.5 panels and you’ll have to take a very short price if you like her

Race 5: 7-6-1

Race 6: 7-3-10

  1. Reigning Fire (7): Interesting maiden special weight where we’ll look for a price; as always, pay attention to the board here as early money is usually good money for firsters; this one is a half to Goodonehoney who won on debut, won at second asking in the Weber Miss, and was a well-supported 5th in the Black-Eyed Susan; dam placed in a number of minor stakes up and down the east coast; Egan having a strong meet with limited starters
  2. Margie’s Band (3): half to Margie’s Money who won first out at 8/1 and just won an optional claimer earlier this month; love the 4 furlong work followed by a pair of 5 furlong drills, last one from the gate
  3. Two Sixteen (10): Ran too good to lose last out getting caught by a nose late

Race 7: 2-3-5

  1. Sacred Walk (2): No need to get cute here; just destroyed a field at this level by 11 last out; holds the formidable double-Beyer edge; drawn well; probably 1/9 in here
  2. You Tell Me (3): Second off a 4+ month layoff so probably needed that one; he has a 2-turn number in April at Pen that’s as good as anyone else, so improvement likely
  3. Calvi (5): Very sharp in victory last out, wouldn’t be surprised at a similar effort here

Race 8: 13-9-11

  1. Great Adventurer (13): Was taken out of his element last out with the slow start at this level; other than that, no one’s been able to run with him early on turf or dirt; should be used to the outside gate given his draws, and don’t mind it here
  2. Jonathan McD (9): Tough to read this one; he was claimed 2 back for 5k, and after a 2+ month layoff, Potts moved him way up to the optional claiming level where he ran last; early connections were obviously high on him but took a drop to the bottom for him to break his maiden which he did easily; demand a price similar to morning line
  3. Gorbachev (11): Rolled easily in his maiden breaker at the 10k level, Keiron spots him smartly off the claim

Race 9: 2-13-8

  1. Time for Quality (2): Let’s try for a price with this lightly-raced 6 year old making his 3rd start of the year and second off a 3+ month layoff; last time he was 2nd off, he improved significantly and a similar improvement puts him right in the mix at a price; figures to be coming late
  2. Midnight Cry (13): Three year old has won 3 of 4, including 2 at this N3L level; gets in under the open 3 condition; has early speed but doesn’t need to be on the lead
  3. Eightyeightmph (8): Three year old is coming off his best 2 career numbers, including the last in a restricted allowance race
