Canterbury Park Racing Analysis — Tuesday, June 30, 2020, by Hunter Ulwelling

Race 1

1st #7 Roverton has the hot connections of Tony Rengstorf and Jareth Loveberry.  Works are decent, only three to judge off of, so it’s kind of hard to make a judgement call here.

2nd #6 Passthecat has the winless trainer of Vic Hanson but decent bloodlines, was a $19,000 purchase by Revolutionary out of a Forestry mare.

3rd #3 Hismuddawasamudda (quite the weird name choice here) sits at 4/1 morning line, really surprising that this one only brought $1,000 being out of a Candy Ride mare, but worth a shot.

Race 2

1st #5 Siouxvalley is coming off the long layoff since September, when he crushed closing weekend by eight and a quarter in a lower level claiming race.  I’m always weary of horses coming this far off of layoffs, but he looks decent on paper.

2nd #2 Purple Monster ran better during the class drop at Tampa, but now he faces even easier competition being against MN breds, and Tim Padilla has picked things up this last week with a few wins so should be better here.

#3 Direct Impact is another coming back that doesn’t look likely to win, but could make a return and hit the board.  Kelsi Harr is an up and coming jockey, and this horse is at his home track that he likes.

Race 3

1st #7 Angelina’s Heaven could be good coming off of a win in Phoenix with three months off.  Shawn Davis is hitting at a solid percentage right now, with seven starts and three wins it’s hard to not bet his horses.  She’s been on the board for a large majority of her career too.

2nd #6 Right on By needs some luck on her side, as she has struggled lately in Oklahoma, but she normally manages seconds and thirds no problem, on the board (including a win) out of five starts here at Canterbury for Diodoro.

3rd #2 Real de Jalpa doesn’t look like one who could do much, but I want to give her the benefit of the doubt after her last race.  She was beaten by a lot on the turf, but I like seeing her back on the dirt here.

Race 4

1st #5 Rosie’s Flowers provided some value to those who bet her last time when she ran second at longer odds.  Miguel Arroyo got his first win here last night (Monday night) so hopefully he can keep that going with this filly.

2nd #7 Mrs. D’s Concerto is lightly raced, ran decent coming off of the long layoff, but otherwise since her career debut when she won, she’s struggled a lot mostly.  Second off the break might help her.

3rd #6 Caterina Iano broke really bad last time and that looked to cost her a better placing.  She’s won and hit the board here before which is good, but her inconsistency is what is going to cost her bettor’s respect here.

Race 5

1st #6 Ima Harley Too has Denny Velazquez riding who’s been riding really well this summer.  Class drop and better jockey should help.  Mike Biehler trains the son of Artie Schiller who’s making his first start off the layoff.

2nd #1 Tabia comes from Gulfstream on a little bit of a break, switching trainers from Ian Wilkes to Joel Berndt who has a higher percentage actually as far as winning goes.  This horse is getting quite a bit of a class drop which should help also.

3rd #4 Wannaplaybigchief drops into the claiming ranks after being off for nine months.  Diodoro trains the son of Joey Franco.  He improved last year by making it into stakes company, but I do expect him to need an out.

Race 6

1st #10 Gone Cruising hasn’t shown hardly anything in his career, his closest margin to even winning was over eight lengths back.  Connections are doing well right now, now against MN breds if that makes a difference.

2nd #11 Circle Me Bert hasn’t hit the board since last August, and hasn’t shown much at all in Illinois.  Honestly, there isn’t much at all for talent in this field and I’ll admit I’m choosing this horse for the odds it sits at.

3rd #8 Stone Cold Heart goes from the maiden special weight ranks down to the bottom, which should help.  Debuts can be hard to judge off of, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this horse runs better here.

Race 7

1st #5 Glacken’s Ghost is trained by Mac Robertson, considered one of Minnesota’s all-time best trainers.  Coming out of stakes races at Oaklawn, even against Arkansas breds will be tough to beat.  Fresh off of a little break.

2nd #7 Notorious Nick’s trainer switches concern me, and the horse has done quite a bit of traveling in the last six months, but his races haven’t been much to look at so I’m just taking a chance here.  Jose Silva is having a decent meet so far with three wins from thirteen starts.

3rd #1 All Under Control is another Jose Silva horse coming from a different barn.  Last ran and won in Phoenix before having some time off.  This is a step up for this horse, but he has a good jockey so that helps too!

Race 8

1st #6 Neverblink is the morning line favorite dropping in for quite cheaper than what he was normally running for.  Chris Richard trains the son of Orb who is coming off of a third place at Oaklawn, and will be tough to beat.

2nd #1 Twirlincottoncandy has two races, ran fourth last out.  Fair amount of time off (due to COVID) and this is his first race for Stephanie Herb.  He’s been training in Phoenix and here, might have some value.

3rd #2 Mr. Cougar ran third here at this level last out after coming from Oaklawn.  Could very well hit the board here.  Not digging the trainer
