A Look Inside: Handicapping the San Vicente Using Pedigrees, by Jessica Tugwell

Only five horses will be contesting the 2019 San Vicente Stakes, but it’s a competitive group with a number of well-bred three-year-olds looking to pick up a graded stakes win.

Synthesis is a son of First Samurai and out of the Bernardini mare Trust in Hope. You have to go back a few generations to find notable relations here, but Synthesis’ third dam is the multiple stakes winner Schematic, who produced the stakes winner Remember Ike and who is the second dam of multiple stakes winning sprinter R Angel Katelyn. Schematic is a half-sister to the millionaire and Breeders Cup Sprint winner Very Subtle. This female family is full of sprint influence, and I think seven furlongs should be right up his alley.

Coliseum has been hyped since before he ever raced, and being by Tapit and out of G1 winning sprinter Game Face, it’s not a surprise that there have been high hopes for the Godolphin homebred. His family goes back deep, actually tracing back to the great broodmare Erin, the third dam of the great racemare Ruffian, as his ninth dam. His sixth dam, High Voltage, was the champion 2-year-old filly of 1954.

Dessman is a son of Union Rags and out of the Trippi mare Frolic’s Appeal. His dam has already produced multiple stakes winner Renaisance Frolic by Paynter, and this colt’s third dam is the very productive multiple stakes winning mare Cherokee Frolic.

Cherokee Frolic’s third dam is Bridal Flower, a granddaughter of La Troienne and a half-sister to the likes of Hall of Famer Searching, the ancestress of such horses as Hall of Famers Affectionately and Allez France and Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero. Incidentally, Searching is also the 6th dam of Withers Stakes winner Tax. Cherokee Frolic herself has produced GSW Fabulous Frolic (by Green Dancer), GSW Lindsay Frolic (by Mt. Livermore), GSP Friendly Frolic (by Mt. Livermore), and SP Buck and Frolic (by Silver Buck). She’s the second dam of Jamaican MG1W Crusader’s Shield, MGSW millionaire Smok’n Frolic (by Smoke Glacken), GSW millionaire Super Frolic (by Pine Bluff), MSW Stormy Frolic (by Summer Squall), SW Cherokee Chase (by Rizzi), SW Smoke’n Coal (by Smoke Glacken), SW Jelly Roll Jive (by Prosper Fager), and the third dam of MGSW Hunter’s Bay (by Ghostzapper) and MSW Frolic’s Revenge (by Vindication).

The Candy Ride gelding Sparky Ville’s dam, Lorelei K, is a Storm Cat half-sister to MGSW millionaire Graeme Hall and G1 winner Harmony Lodge (by Hennessy). Another sibling, Win’s Fair Lady (by Dehere), produced graded stakes winner First Passage (by Giant’s Causeway), who in turn produced GSW Berned by Bernardini. His second dam, Win Crafty Lady, was a multiple stakes winner from 6 furlongs to 1 1/16 miles, and she is a half-sister to Diligence, whose biggest win came in the 6 furlong Tom Fool Handicap at Belmont Park.

Savagery is by Bellamy Road and out of the Successful Appeal mare Successful Katie. His dam is a half-sister to the multiple stakes winning sprinter Abbondanza (by Alphabet Soup). His second dam, Katie McLaury, was a stakes winning mare who won fifteen of her forty-four lifetime starts.
