Stakes Preview: G3 Regret Stakes, by Andrew Rdesinski

The Regret

  1. Dominga- Bridgmohan/ Cox
    1. Brad Cox has been firing as of late. Bridgmohan has been on this horse since Keenland back in October. He has ridden her in every stake so far including this race today. Her most recent workout was pretty sharp as well which is a good sign. Has yet to really take that step forward in form so today might be the day.
  2. His Glory- Hernandez Jr./ Sharp
    1. His Glory is a 30/1 shot for Joe Sharp who has been questionable as of late with a bunch of positive drug tests in Louisiana. He claimed this horse last race in which she won going a Mile and a 16th on the turf for a claiming tag of 50K. She seems to like the turf a lot more than dirt after that most recent start. Joe Sharp owns this one as well so I can see why he would take the step forward on this filly.
  3. Stunning Sky- Gaffalione/ Maker
    1. Stunning Sky is another longshot, that has a chance to close today. She is improving in each start and should improve today. She has improved in each stake appearance as well. I think Gafflione will by flying late on this filly.
  4. In Good Spirits- Mena/ Stall
    1. Mena will be sending this one today. In Good Spirits is a very fast horse early on and should be able to get the lead or be close. I really do not think that she can get the distance given today. I think she is more of a sprinter and unless she gets loose early, she will be backtracking down the stretch.
  5. Crystal Cliffs (FR)- Velazquez/ Motion
    1. Velazquez comes in to ride Crystal Cliffs again after winning in her USA debut at CD at the same distance. She earned an 85 beyer in that performance and looks to improve today. Velazquez is a hall of fame jockey for a reason and I feel like he can get an improvement out of this filly today.
  6. Micheline- Bravo/ Stidham
    1. I never can win with Joe Bravo ridden horses so I won’t be using today but the horse is still a capable filly. She has proven herself in many different stakes races at multiple tracks. Joe Bravo got the most out of her in her most recent start however. She ran a good 2nd in a Grade 3 a few races back as well. She will be closing today so hopefully Bravo can give her a clean trip.
  7. Edgee Angel/ Lanerie/ Simms
    1. I don’t like Edgee Angel a lot today. The connections are average at best and the horse just seems to not be much. Her figures are nothing special and she has to close possibly. I think she will need a huge step up in run and I just don’t see that happening today.
  8. Wexx- Beschizza/ Jones
    1. Wexx is another longshot in this field. I don’t see much in this filly either except Adam Beschizza is a talented rider and he could improve this horse 2nd off of her claim. I wouldn’t bet this filly today though and will be looking elsewhere.
  9. Eve of War- Geroux/ Pletcher
    1. Eye of War ran horribly in her first race against stakes competition but gets Geroux today. I think the horse needs the lead in order to win. She might be able to get it today but I think the 4 is quicker than her. Geroux tends to be patient on horses which could cost her today.
  10. Harvey’s Lil Goil- Garcia/ Mott
    1. Harvey’s Lil Goil is an interesting one today. She has a stake win on the dirt and seems to prefer the dirt. However, Bill Mott put her in on the turf today, which she hasn’t seen since her debut race as a 2yo in which she ran 4th. She should be sitting closer today than that turf start so I think she has a chance to improve. Martin Garcia is a better dirt jockey than turf and keeps the mount here after the bad start in the Fantasy at Oaklawn. I think she will take to the turf very solidly and could be dangerous here.
  11. Witez- Landeros/ Wilkes
    1. Witez likes long races in my opinion. I think she is a mile and a half type of horse, but today she gets only 1M and 1/8th. Landeros isn’t having his best year this year but he can still get the job done when needed. I won’t be using today however, and will let her beat me today.
  12. Pass the Plate- Leparoux/ McGee
    1. Pass the Plate was on everyone’s ticket last time out in the Tepin at 23/1 but only finished 3rd closing late. Leparoux stays aboard for her 2nd start off the layoff. Pass the Plate should get a good trip today and stretches out which should be beneficial. I think Leparoux will be the main factor in whether this horse wins or not today.
  13. Hendy Woods- Carroll/ Casse
    1. Hendy Woods is the most interesting of the bunch for me but she has to break from the 13 hole instead today. Declan Carroll gets to keep the mount in the stakes race today and that is a positive. She ran very well going a flat mile at the Fair Grounds for Mark Casse but has been off since March. I think she has a legit shot today and should be ready off the bench.
