Stakes Preview: G1 Hollywood Gold Cup, by Andrew Rdesinski

Hollywood Gold Cup

  1. Parsimony- Gutierrez/ O’Neill
    1. Parsimony is coming out a Dubai win in the Curlin Stakes which was probably his best race to date. Reddam Racings go to rider Mario Gutierrez gets the mount again today. I think the horse is a one paced colt but could be coming into form at the right time.
  2. Midcourt- Espinoza/Shirreffs
    1. Midcourt is my top pick today in this race. The distance seems to be a little much but the Blinkers off is a very good angle for me in this one. He might like the blinkers going slightly shorter but doesn’t need them going longer. Espinoza keeps the mount and is coming out of a Grade 1 in his last start. The triple figure beyers are another thing some horses in here do not have.
  3. Higher Power- Prat/Sadler
    1. I do not think this horse is worthy of 9/5. I think he actually prefers turf or a shorter distance. This surface and going a Mile and a Quarter just don’t add up to me. Prat is a plus but since Prat hopped aboard the horse has went down in form. Will be tossing at a short price.
  4. Brown Storm (CHI)- Cedillo/McCarthy
    1. I don’t like this horse at all today. He has not won in 2 years and his last start is still not good enough in this field. Cedillo hopping on instead of Hector Berrios is a huge plus but not enough in my opinion.
  5. Improbable- Van Dyke/ Baffert
    1. Improbable should be the favorite in this field. Van Dyke and Baffert team up again and his last start was 100% a prep for his race. The distance should work for him but I believe Baffert will have him ready in this spot. SA seems to be his preferred surface too.
  6. Tenfold- Smith/ Asmussen
    1. Asmussen ships out west and Money Mike gets aboard. Only one win in 10 starts over the past 2 years is not Grade 1 caliber. He has never run at Santa Anita and seems to just not be the same horse he was as a 3yo. Will be looking elsewhere.

TOP PICKS:

#2 Midcourt

#5 Improbable

#1 Parsimony
