Stakes Preview: G1 Acorn Stakes, by Andrew Rdesinski

  1. Gamine- Velazquez/ Baffert
    1. Gamine seems to be one of the top contenders today. Johnny V should be sending from the rail for the lead early on. A 98 beyer is the highest by a lot in the field. Can she duplicate that 98 today or will she have more trouble in this spot. I will be using it and she is a possible single.
  2. Lucrezia- Leparoux/ Delacour
    1. Lucrezia seems to be just slightly outclassed here. She has some early pace to compete early on but she also has never done a one turn mile in her career. Leparoux has been cold recently and that trend doesn’t make this mount look appetizing today.
  3. Water White- Vargas Jr./ Rodrgiuez
    1. Probably the best closer in the field. However, Water White is not quite fast enough for this field. If the pace falls apart, this is the one you want to close at a price. I will be cheering for my buddy Jorge Vargas Jr. but I just don’t see it happening today.
  4. Casual- Santana Jr./ Asmussen
    1. Acorn to me seems to be the only one in here that can beat Gamine. I think One Mile is her cap in distance however, so it will be interesting to see how she handles the one turn mile today. Santana and Asmussen win all the time together so I wouldn’t be surprised if today was another one of those races with a win.
  5. Glass Ceiling- Rosario/ Gargan
    1. Glass Ceiling is way over her head today in this spot. She seems to be a very good allowance horse but not much more than that right now. She drifted in her last start at 7F against weaker opponents which to me makes me think a mile is too far. I will be looking elsewhere today.
  6. Pleasant Orb- Franco/ Tagg
    1. Pleasant Orb is coming into this race fresh out of really weak fields. Tonalists Shape is a very good filly but Pleasant Orb wasn’t that close to her in that race. She seems to not really want the lead or like to close. I think she might just be mid pack all the way around and need a full on collapse of pace to make up any ground.
  7. Perfect Alibi- Ortiz Jr./ Casse
    1. Perfect Alibi is the class of the field but isn’t too quick. Irad keeping the mount is promising. This is her first start as a 3yo so I expect improvement. This field is a lot weaker in my opinion than the fields she was facing as a 2yo. She should be sitting the trip and possibly will be going by the leaders at the quarter pole.
