Santa Anita Park Racing Analysis — Sunday, December 30, 2018, by Hunter Ulwelling

Race 1- #8 Artie B Good ran a solid race last out as the chalk.  He’s had a nice little 60 days off, his works are just average here but works don’t always matter.  Can’t beat his jockey either, running for the same tag as last out.

2nd #2 Raven Creek finished behind Artie B Good last out and it was by all means a good race.  In the first couple days of the meet his trainer Jeff Mullins has won two out of five races, Baze is riding ok.  Although he’s okay at running a mile, he ran better when he got shortened up.

3rd #5 Flip The Coin Jan is a consistent Trappe Shot running colt and has done well for his short racing career.  Recently got claimed as the chalk last out. Also another who seems to appreciate the 6 ½ furlongs as opposed to the mile.

Race 2– 1st #6 Secret Maneuver is the one to watch for coming off of a class drop, and I originally wanted to take the six on top, but preferred the consistency this girl has.  Last out didn’t receive much love from the bettors, but she was just overmatched.

2nd #5 Portal Creek got beat by the six a couple of starts back, but I see this one running better as I aim to beat the chalk.  Reasonable class drop here, she’s by Shanghai Bobby. Her performances haven’t been stellar but class drops are good for us as bettors.

3rd #4 Time for Suzie is a tough one to trust… Her performances are either great, or awful.  33 lengths she was beaten last out, and that’s not something we like. Like Secret Maneuver, the class drop will help, but I don’t agree with the heavy races she’s ran.  Why? Because she wasn’t good enough for them.

Race 3- 1st #2 Red Shelby is good, if not better, on the dirt.  So I like to see her come back to running on it, but wonder why they are so big on running her on the turf when her efforts are strong on the dirt.  So a good change, and good connections.

2nd #6 Conquest Flatterme receives a little class relief and likes the dirt.  Most her best races have been ran at Santa Anita. Lots to like with her coming back on the turf.

3rd #7 So, we have a horse named Sturdy One.  Who hasn’t won at Turf Paradise and I recently tweeted that I don’t understand how a TUP horse could be competive, but then I saw she loves Santa Anita.  With that being said, now I can take her.

Race 4– 1st #6 Courteous is really the one to beat.  You don’t see many break their maiden and then go onto run third in a graded stakes race, so wow! There’s a lot to respect there.  Claiborne owns part of her, and their horses mean business.

2nd #7 Giza Goddess took a while to break her maiden, but when she did, she laid a smack down on them.  I see her running third.

3rd #5 Colonial Creed just threw in a clunker two races back, but besides that, she’s done very well in her short racing career.  The bettors certainly like her.

Race 4– 1st 5 Elwood J was a steal of a deal as a $16,000 purchase.  Now at the age of four, he’s at just over $163,000 in earnings.  He prefers the dirt, and has a good racing record here. But man this is a salty race.

2nd #6 Gain Ground takes a decent class drop.  One who has seen success running at higher levels, but maybe just isn’t into racing the way he once was because three bad races in a row, but he was just in tough spots.

3rd #8 Impression runs a couple of good races, then a bad race, and then back to the good races.  He’s done well running at higher levels than this, and was claimed earlier this year. He’s sure raced a lot this year though….

Race 5– 1st #8 Anuket is trained by Bob Baffert, so in other words, automatically put on top! Lots and lots of workouts, and a $575,000 purchase price, Juddmonte farms isn’t messing around.  Her pedigree can’t be beat. By Pioneerof The Nile out of a Tapit mare.

2nd #7 Bizwhacks sure knows how to be the bridesmaid, so we know she is capable of doing it here.  Doug O’Neill trains and he is finding success in the short time this meet has been running. If Baffert didn’t have what I see could be a monster horse, I’d take her on top.

3rd #6 Emrata ran a third last out, and again, might do it here.  She also has good breeding, by Tapit out of a Tale of The Cat mare.  As she gets experience I can offer more to say about her.

Race 7- 1st #9 Emotional Ride takes what I consider to be a steep class drop.  To benefit himself, of course. This field isn’t loaded with talent, and that’s ok, but I think he’s just the best one.

2nd #3 Serve Me Double ran third last out and I don’t consider Turfway to be a good place when your coming to SA your running against the big dogs.  Give him a shot.

3rd #6 On The Right drops in for half the price he ran over a year ago, and that was his last race.  I’m assuming he got hurt since it was such a long layoff but let’s see.

Race 8– 1st #4 English Dancer is consistent, and that’s what we like.  Winning four in a row a little while back at the tracks she ran at is wonderful, so I’d like to see her get back to her ways.

2nd #3 Pulpit Rider looks good also, fifteen starts, and five wins, is very good.  She’s a multiple stakes winner but a couple the races she got put in were too tough for her.  Rebounds to the same spot as last out.

3rd #2 Cordialty drops in class, needed.  She’s made over $400,000 and being by Papa Clem, who’s a good deal as a stallion this is good to see.  Just won a stakes two back.

Race 9– 1st #7 Amuse has been running well and just broke her maiden.  When you have Mike Smith aboard you know your in good shape.  Since her layoff she’s improved.

2nd #4 Spend Spend Spend won last out, before that a second place.  Both were good races. She lives up to her name, wasn’t a cheap filly.

3rd #3 Uppercut is a little tough to take based on her last race, but this is an open race with many opportunities for anybody to take a shot.

Race 10- 1st #1 Gallantlystreaming looks pretty decent.  Two fourth place finishes but I think over time she will get better, Sadler trains.  Jockey at 21% but again the meet hasn’t been long.

2nd #6 Mind for Mischief has a slight advantage of having a couple pounds cut off because it’s an apprentice jockey.  1st race out, don’t know what to expect.

3rd #10 Harmless.  Throw out her first race? Jockey change also.  Creative Cause has turned out well, but I think she needs some experience and she’ll be much better.
