OBS Winter Mixed Review- Tuesday, Feb 6th 2020- By Jessica Tugwell

The 2020 OBS Winter Mixed Sale took place on January 28 th and 29 th , and overall the sale saw increases
from last year. Over the two days, 359 horses sold for a total of $4,957,800, while forty more horses sold
for only $4,459,900 in the 2019 sale. The average of $19,527 was up 4.7% from last year, and the
$11,000 median showed an increase of $22.2% from last year. The buyback percentage was 25.4%
compared to 18.6% last year.
The overall sale topper was Hip #4. Consigned by Pelican State Thoroughbreds, Agent, this yearling son
of Union Rags sold for $165,000 to Blue Sky Stables. Out of the Mr. Greeley mare La Milanesa, this half-
brother to stakes winner Ginger N Rye (by More Than Ready) comes from the tail-female line of
champion and Triple Tiara winner Chris Evert; this is the family of champion Chief’s Crown and graded
stakes winners such as Classic Crown, Revasser, Bowmans Band, and Pollard’s Vision.
The highest-priced horse of racing age in the sale was Hip #219, Summer At The Spa. A winner of her
only start to date, this filly consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, sold for $125,000 to Ralph M.
Evans. A daughter of Summer Front and out of the Giant’s Causeway mare Myself, this filly’s second
dam was a multiple graded stakes placed daughter of Kentucky Derby winner Fusiachi Pegasus.
Hip #176, an eight-year-old daughter of Colonel John named Inside Out, was the highest-priced
broodmare of the sale, consigned by Ends Wells, Agent for Miller Racing LLC, and sold for $50,000 to
Rodolphe Brisset. A black type-placed winner out of the Johar mare Star of Johar, this mare also hails
from the family of Chris Evert, as her 3 rd dam, Charmie Carmie, is a half-sister to that champion. She’s
currently believed to be in foal to Oscar Performance, whose first foals will arrive this year.

To follow up on the horses I highlighted in my preview of this sale:
My top selection in the sale, Hip #266, sold privately for $74,000 to Joe Brocklebank, Agent for
Centennial Farms LLC from the consignment of Alliance Sales Agency, Agent III. She was the ninth-
highest priced horse in the sale, and the fourth-highest priced horse of racing age.
Hip #316 was withdrawn from the sale.
Hip #8, a yearling daughter of Midnight Storm out of Lily Maria consigned by Sharon Biamonte, Agent,
sold from $15,000 to Marlene and Derek Evans.
Hip #655, a yearling colt by Race Day consigned by Kaizen Sales, Agent XIV, was purchased by Yosuanys
Garcia for $2,200.
Hip #507, by Teuflesburg and out of Splash of Roses, sold for $5,500 to Jamie Centeno from the
consignment of McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent.
Hip #653, a son of Central Banker also consigned by McMahon, was a $4,000 RNA.
Hip #54, She Told You, in foal to Lookin at Lucky and consigned by Firefly Farm, sold for $13,000. While
it’s difficult to speculate without seeing the horse in person, I find the purchase price interesting,
considering Lookin at Lucky stands for $20,000 in 2020.
Hip #41, Quick and Golden, consigned by Middleground Consignment, went unsold with a $3,700
reserve. I’m a bit surprised by this as well, as I figured a daughter of Medaglia d’Oro would at least bring

some interest. I assume the facts that she is 13 years old and hasn’t produced any noteworthy foals
deterred buyers.
Hip #173, Molly and Lo, was withdrawn from the sale.
