Laurel Park Racing Analysis — Saturday, January 5, 2019, by Chris Woods

Race 1: MdClm $50k 3 Year Olds 1 & 1/16thM

1st: #5 Celtic Treasure, brutal 3-5 on ML but the Beyers are significantly better than anything else in this field. Most recent in MdSptWt company is a decent effort at 15-1 to finish 4th. Repeat of last race you’d think would win this one.

2nd: #2 Multiple, Graham Motion’s colt sent out for a second time after an even debut at 1M finishing 4th and earning making up lengths in the stretch. 46 Beyer suggests he can run a little and should improve for this one.

3rd: #3 Wall, the last effort was pretty good showing strong improvement from his first two and he was just 2 lengths behind the winner.

Race 2: MdClm $25k F&M 5 & ½F

1st: #4 Star Seed Child, 4 in the money finishes in 5 career starts and owns the highest Beyers in the field consistently in the mid-50s recently. Doesn’t mind wet or dry tracks which should serve her well if we get rain overnight. Some distance relief should help as she has the speed of the field. Can’t forget to mention top barn Claudio Gonzalez sends this one away.

2nd: #1 Cool Alley, don’t like picking debuters on top, but Miguel Vera is hitting on 30% (3-10). The two back drill at Churchill is excellent going 4F in 47 and 3 breezing.

3rd: #5 Snippety, decent debut effort at 8-1 earning a 48 Beyer locally back in March. Drills do not suggest she is ready.

Race 3: Clm $5k 1M

1st: #6 Young American, 4 for 8 locally just about says it all in this field. 3 wins in a row at this level we’ll see if Magee can continue the Gonzalez magi. Last out 73 is superior for this level.

2nd: #5 Goodbyeseeulater, can make a case for this one on top, tried allowance company last out at Charles Town where he finished 4th but lost only a length. 4 for 21 locally isn’t pretty.

3rd: #3 I’m Mr. Blue, consistent runner is 3 for his last 7 at levels higher than this one. Definitely a contender.

Race 4: MdClm $10k F&M 3 Year Olds 1M

1st: #7 Ash n’ Em, absolutely brutal field, this one ships down from New York with Rudy Rodriguez who is always a threat here at Laurel. Her first effort was at the $30k level and she attracted top national rider Irad Ortiz. The performance itself was even, if uninspiring and the Beyer was only 15, but expect some improvement second time out, going longer, and adding blinkers.

2nd: #2 Empire Panther, has the highest Beyer in the field back in October at the $25k level where she narrowly missed by just a length. Since then the performances have gotten worse as the distance has gotten longer.

3rd: #1 Seville’s Princess, not much to say here, didn’t embarrass herself on Del’s turf in a MdSpWt although wasn’t really involved. First try on dirt?

Race 5: MdClm $10k F&M 1 & 1/16thM

1st: #6 War Tweet, 3 straight 3rd place finishes at higher levels, don’t like the last but it was in the slop, expect a better performance. Has highest Beyers in the field from the summer.

2nd: #2 Welly, definitely tired in the last over the slop but like the positioning heading into the stretch. Stamina is a concern, have to wonder why trainer isn’t attempting something shorter.

3rd: #5 Complicated Lady, don’t really understand the 9-5 ML favoritism on this one who lost by 7 back in July in Eerie and hasn’t raced since. Decent Beyers in her two career attempts.

Race 6: Clm $5k 1M

1st: #6 Ingadore, have to pick this one on top, in his first start at Laurel over the slop he narrowly missed by a neck earning a 74 Beyer. Should achieve at this level, must use especially if sloppy track.

2nd: #7 Visual Effect, another one with consistently decent Beyers, turf is probably his preferred surface. 3 back he ran well coming from way back in the MdMil Starter Handicap and two back he was second by just a neck at this level.

3rd: #3 Turbin, I have picked this one on top in the past and gotten burned, only 3 for 39 for his career at Laurel but seems to have liked the sloppy track last out. If wet, possible exacta opportunity with #6 Ingadore. Avoid if dry.

Race 7: Clm $20k 1M

1st: #2 Gold Man, 3 for 8 locally and the Beyers come back always decent. Two back effort was just 3 lengths behind Blow the Whistle who has had an absolutely monster year especially at the StrAlw level. Deciding factor for me is the Dec 20 drill at Pen going 3F in 35 and 1. 3 back performance won at this level. Loves the wet track going 8 for 22.

2nd: #1 The Great Casby, can’t go wrong with this one either, clearly Ness has him at his best up at Parx. The Beyers are superior but he hasn’t been able to cash in at this level and I can’t trust Parx shippers.

3rd: #3 Datt Melody, excellent performance last out at the $16k level winning by 2 lengths. Has 5 wins in 13 attempts at Laurel. Was at his best this summer at Del. Definitely a contender.

Race 8: Clm $12.5k F&M 5 & ½F

1st: #1 Madame Tiger, you can see the Gonzalez effect on this one clearly as she won (then DQd) her first attempt from the new barn last out locally. More importantly she’s shown prowess over a wet track winning twice in four attempts. Must use on top.

2nd: #2 Very Charming, excellent last effort winning at this exact condition earning a 57 Beyer. Still improving.

3rd: #4 Joyful Noise, a decent effort in her last. She was much second best that day over slop but beat a number of these horses there.
