Gulfstream Park Racing Analysis — Wednesday, March 13, 2019, by Taylor Bassett

Race 1: 2-1-7

#2 TRULY COURAGEOUS has two straight second place finishes in the same conditions as today’s race. Was claimed for 16k last time out. #1 HEIDI HO is 5 for 7 at today’s 5f distance on the grass. Drops from 30k to the 16k level after fading bad in her last start. #7 A BIT OF MISCHIEF makes her first return to the claiming ranks after 4 unsuccessful tries at the optional claiming and allowance levels.

Race 2: 4-5-6

#4 IS THAT MAGIC looks to be the only horse with much early speed and could find herself in front turning for home. I’m thinking she holds them off. #5 PEGGITY goes out for trainer Pompay after being vanned off last time. Pompay is 40% off the 61-180 day layoff. #6 CASUAL CIARO has a record of 1 for 31 that doesn’t inspire much confidence, but has been around it recently and finds an average field.

Race 3: 3-7-6

#3 PORTAL seems like the logical one here. Ran a good second at this level last time. Has good speed figs and Leparoux stays. #7 OSKAR BLUES ran in the same race as Portal last time and finished right behind him in third. Eligible to improve second off the layoff. #6 COAL TRUTH taking a step up in class from 16k to 30k, but grabs Gaffalione and is likely a big price. Would need a big improvement in the speed fig department.

Race 4: 2-4-5

#2 MRS CHAPMAN goes turf to dirt and MSW to MCL. Nice to see Gaffalione showing interst. #4 PURPLE GIRL has the most experience in the field and has flashed a little early speed in her races. There isn’t much speed in her race today. Could hold on. #5 DANCE THE DAY AWAY is a first time starter who has had a steady work tab for today’s debut. Taking a shot with this one as others look iffy at best.

Race 5: 2-6-7

#2 DRAGON MOON ran on turf for the first time in the US back in Jan and ran a good figure at this level. Servis has good numbers in turf sprints and good numbers off the layoff. #6 STURGEON come in with two good races in a row at a similar level. A repeat of those efforts puts him right there. #7 DIAMOND MINT is a frustrating horse for sure. He likes to earn checks but doesn’t like to get his picture taken. He’s as consistent as you can ask for.

Race 6: 5-3-1

#5 OVERLEVERAGED goes out for Linda Rice who does well with MCLs. Ran pretty well last time on the drop down and could win against this group. #3 COME ON VENEZUELA has a bunch of finishes in the money at a similar level and appears the one to beat. #1 ZAYA is a player strictly on the dirt to turf and MSW to MCL move.

Race 7: 6-7-3

#6 JORDY’S READY hasn’t run a bad race since breaking her maiden. Gets a cutback in distance and goes out first off the claim. Likely favorite gets it done today. #7 COTTON TOOYAH hasn’t done too much running consistently at a higher level. Seems they are putting this one in a logical spot and the drop in class should help. #3 TUESDAY’S ROSE has some speed and stretches out to try 7f for the first time. 3 for 3 in the money this year.

Race 8: 2-5-6

#2 TWISTED LICORICE should sit right off the leaders in his first try against winners. Got back to the grass to break the maiden last time impressively. Like his chances on the turf. #5 MARCELINO might offer a little value so im taking a shot with him underneath. His turf efforts have been solid and figures to be involved. #6 QUICK CONNECT makes his first start on turf after becoming undefeated in two starts on the dirt. Likely favorite.

Race 9: 5-7-3

#5 SKY RUN lost by a nose last time at this level. Zerpa is high percentage off the shelf. #7 ROLLING BOBBY stepped up to 16k last time and ran a good second. He is well spotted here back at 12.5k #3 PASO A LA REINA gets a cut back in trip after finishing a solid second last race.

Race 10: 4-6-3

#4 HELEN has 2 wins and is 5 for 6 ITM lifetime. Cruised to a big victory last time at the distance. Drops in from a stake last time out. The one to beat. #6 DANA GRACE ran a solid race in a stake last time out. Two back was on turf so you can excuse that one. Broke her maiden well three back. Definitely a major player here. #3 HILL VALLEY should be used underneath in my opinion.  The race last out worries me but it was off a short layoff and she ran a few good ones before that.

Race 11: 3-8-1

#3 SUPER MAMA has good enough speed figs comparatively and ran second in her last two at this level. Likely favorite and likely winner. #8 MAMBO DANCER goes out for the Delgado barn who has been on fire. Horse needs to improve to win but this isn’t a terrible spot to get it done. #1 YES ITS FACTUAL gets a little turn back and I like this one underneath at a price.
