Canterbury Park Racing Analysis — Tuesday, July 21, 2020, by Hunter Ulwelling

Race 1

1st #5 Hi Ho Cheerio was a $2,500 purchase who improved quite a bit last out.  Plane Talk went on to run in the Mystic Lake Derby and finished fifth, and Real Grace came back to win in Canada, so this could be his shot to break his maiden.

2nd #1 Frank the Mayor lost against Hi Ho Cheerio last out when he clipped heals at the start, and finished fifth beaten by ten lengths.  He has Denny Velazquez back aboard so I think he will improve this time if he breaks cleaner.

3rd #3 Champs Success is slowly getting better, his trainer is 40% at the meet right now which is good, (he’s had five starts so far) and an impressive winning percentage overall this year.  Last out wasn’t great but we will see if this time he runs better.

Race 2

1st #2 Cynical Girl has lost as the chalk the last four times in a row, but she continues to improve her margin and get closer each time.  Really, she should win this time.  Only been off the board once in six starts.

2nd #6 Lets Party Marti only lost by a length and a quarter last out behind Lilfeatherredindian who ran in a stake last week.  She’s only ran three times and her second race was kind of a flop, but after a seven- month layoff she came back pretty good.

3rd #5 Gotham City Girl has run third three times out of the four starts she’s had in Minnesota.  She’s trained by Miguel Silva.  Ry Eikleberry and Silva usually do pretty well together too, so she’s worth a show bet.

Race 3

1st #2 Hotasapistol just ran third in the Frances Genter, that was a good performance and her career best effort, before that her races were not great.  She will still have to step it up here to win, but she can do it.

2nd #3 Madisonian has ran once and won impressively at big odds.  It might be a challenge for her to face horses who have more experience and have won many more races than her, but it’ll be good to see her get more experience.

3rd #7 Papa’s Isla Doll might not belong in this race and I am curious how she is at 9/2 morning line, but out of twenty-two races she’s won five times and usually puts in good efforts in the lower level races.  Maybe she’ll be fine here too.

Race 4

1st #8 Champagne Affair was claimed by Broberg last out, and he does well wherever he runs horses so always worth a bet.  She was trained by Wesley Ward in the beginning of her career, but then was claimed and has since ran two seconds in a row.

2nd #4 Dat Girl drops in class here so that could help her out.  She’s finished third four times but can’t seem to figure out how to win, she’s also an Arkansas bred running against open company.  She was competitive at her home track this spring.

3rd #2 Jakealina drops in class (which was must needed), and hasn’t shown anything since a couple of third place finishes at Fonner.  Also goes back on the dirt, and cuts back in distance which could also help her.

Race 5

1st #1 Thealligatorhunter has worked a couple bullets, yet to race but the works are competitive.  Tim Padilla has picked up some wins over the past few weeks and is having a pretty good meet.

2nd #2 Passthecat has one race and finished second, and finally Monday night Vic Hanson pulled off his first win of the year, so maybe he can keep the good luck rolling with this one.

3rd #7 Kid’s Inheritance was an $80,000 purchase by Goldencents, owned by Lothenbach Stables and trained by Joel Berndt.  Works seem decent, making his first start here.

Race 6

1st #8 Two Be Royal hardly ever misses the board and ran a good race coming off of a long layoff.  Hasn’t won since summer of 2018 so it would be nice to see her bounce back and break the streak.  Loveberry is aboard.

2nd #2 Lila’s Lucky Lady has won two in a row which is pretty good.  Really seems to like this track.  Mike Biehler is having a pretty solid meet so far too.

3rd #4 Trendy Neve just missed in this race last out by a head, always the hardest way to lose.  She ran a big race after a long layoff which is always promising.  All nine of her races have been here too.

Race 7

1st #11 Hunter’s Hellcat drops from the maiden special weight ranks down to the bottom.  Two back she ran really well coming off of a winter break, but then she kind of went downhill in her last start.  Maybe she’ll be better here.

2nd #10 Speeding Lady also comes on a class drop, just ran third at the maiden claiming level $40,000 beaten by over seven lengths.  She’ll have to step it up, but an easier spot will help her out.

3rd #3 Golden Gopher drops in for half of her last price tag, finished third.  Wasn’t a bad first effort but also didn’t show a ton.  Denny V and Joel Berndt are always worth a bet too.

Race 8

1st #7 Semi Charmed Day gets the blinkers on, and a bit of a class drop.  He’s trained by Mac Robertson.  Also gets a jockey change to Constantino Roman.  He was a $32K purchase who like most in this field, just hasn’t shown much.

2nd #6 Hoist Your Glass ran third at this level last out.  One who hasn’t shown hardly anything in his racing career yet, it was his best race yet when he finished third last out.  I’m sure he will hit the board here too.

3rd #5 Mischevious Mo was a $240K purchase who has been off for five months since the Fairgrounds.  Was in tougher there, but not much effort shown.  Switches trainers from Chris Block to Joel Berndt.

Race 9

1st #7 Mas Takela has been pretty weak in his last two starts, but now drops in class out of the allowance ranks.  Also changes jockeys, and it’s his second start off a layoff so he should be getting fit.

2nd #5 Bye Bye Bennie switches from Nancy Sheehan to Mike Biehler and also drops from the allowance ranks to a claiming tag of $15K.  It’s been almost a year since he’s even hit the board or been competitive, so hopefully he can bounce back.

3rd #3 Winter’s Run has changed trainers recently, and finished third at this level last time.  First decent effort in a long time, this fella hasn’t won in thirteen months.  Maybe he can hit the board again.
