Canterbury Park Racing Analysis — Thursday, June 25, 2020, by Nick Seevers

Race 1

6 ½ Furlongs Fillies and Mares 3+ Claiming Price $10k NW3L

  1. 1 Dress Shopping – First time out as a  4 year old, coming out of a bullet work on June 16, Very logical spot for this Filly to start her 4 year old campaign. The 9 month lay off is a bit of a pause, but if she fires anywhere near her last 3 efforts, she should have no problem with this field.
  2. 6 Flan – This Tim Padilla claimed shipper coming in from Tampa stretches a furlong from last out. What should be a slow pace, may be able to get on the lead and slow down enough to hold off the field. She is a small play in horizontals, for me.
  3. 4 Vegan Goes Best – Stepping up from the $5k claiming ranks with an easy win last out. A big enough step up and a decent enough field, no win bets for me, but if can get a price, worth underneath in the verticals.

Race 2

1 Mile 3+ Allowance O/C NW2 Other Than

  1. 5 Rocknroll Rocket – This is strictly a play trying to beat a 9/5 morning line favorite. This 4 year old Curlin Gelding ran a good race last out, fanning four wide at the turn and fought on well. The added distance shouldn’t  hurt this horse. I anticipate a slower pace than last out and can see this one wiring the field.
  2. 2 Clear the Mine – This is a must use in all horizontals. Shipping in from Turf Paradise, this 7 year old gelding has 3 wins from 4 starts and a 2nd in 2020, 2 on the dirt, 2 on the turf, this mile distance should fit him perfectly. Hate the 9/5 morning line, but it makes perfect sense given his 2020 campaign thus far.
  3. 4 Bobby Baby – Another Turf Paradise shipper, coming in off of 4 straight hitting the board. He likes to run right off the pace setters and with the slow pace this one has every right to hit the board again, I just don’t see win potential here.

Race 3

5 Furlongs Fillies and Mares 3+ Claiming Price $5k NW2L

  1. 3 Who’s Fooling Who – Ran 2nd last out at this level versus Race 1’s Vegan Goes Best, if that Filly runs off the screen in her step up, this is an even larger play for me. This 4 year old filly has run consistently this year with no wins, but has been facing tougher at Sam Houston and Will Rogers. A slight shortening and a pocket trip should give this 5/1 morning line filly a legit win shot today.
  2. 4 Coco Loco Mama – Turf Paradise invader, this 5 year old Mare should be up near the lead. She had a fast work back on June 6 that gives her a live shot at 6/1 on the morning line.
  3. 5 Fables Love Affair – Turf Paradise shipper coming in on a 4 month layoff, broke her maiden last out, shortening here from 6 ½ to 5. Don’t like her works so far over this track but this field isn’t offering much in terms of choice. I tried hard to pick one of the double digit horses to make this Trifecta pay, but couldn’t get past Fables Love Affair’s maiden win. Taking them wire to wire at 6 ½ should make this horse a must use on horizontals.

Race 4

1 Mile Turf 3+ Minnesota Bred Allowance

  1. 4 Nora’s Legacy – First time turf starter Fed Biz out of Street Reflection (Street Cry) should enjoy the turf and the added distance. Francisco Bravo has been great at Canterbury so far this year, he also bred and owns this horse, I’m going to take his expertise and the dirt to turf move and hope for the 6/1 morning line.
  2. 3 Rental Pool – Coming off a nice showing 2 weeks ago on the dirt, this 3 year old filly should take a step up back on the turf. She broke her maiden last year as a 2 year old at Canterbury, moved over to the dirt for a stakes race. If she hits the same number as last time turf she fits this group very well.
  3. The rest of the 5 runners are coming off 250+ day layoffs. I’m hitting the all button for the 10% Pick 5, this level off of that layoff I’m not even going to try and decide who is ready to run and who is in here for the conditioning.

Race 5

6 Furlongs 3+ Minnesota Bred Maiden Claiming $7,500

**Maiden Claiming Minnesota Bred** Shrug Emoji

  1. 1 Sweet as Canbe – First time starter for Mclean Robertson with Mucho Macho Man. I mean I don’t have much else in this field
  2. 11 Baby Gordita – 2nd time out, class relief with a small stretch out. Gives this one a shot underneath.
  3. Wide Open, with lots of first time starters, this like the last is an all for me, which means the Pick 5 is a pass for me.

Race 6

1 Mile Turf  Fillies and Mares 3+ Minnesota Bred Maiden

  1. 1 For Saras Sake – First start since last September, coming off a bullet work on May 31. Don’t expect a price with this one with so many first time starters, but given previous efforts and barn switch, this one has a legit chance at breaking her maiden on try number 7.
  2. 2 Note Pad – Keeps stretching out on work outs, times are solid for this level. Can’t get a win bet from me, but an underneath effort looks possible.
  3. 14 Timeinthetavern – First out last November moved off turf, raced 15 days ago, moving back to the turf. If this one scratches in and stays on turf is a must play for me.

Race 7

6 ½ Furlongs 3+ Claiming $10k

  1. 1 Omen of Change – Shortening from a mile to 6 furlongs in claiming races is an angle I love to play, moving from Oaklawn to Canterbury this one has a win and a place already this year. If I get anywhere near the morning line this would be my play of the day. A big win bet for me down to 7/2.
  2. 9 Creative Art – Another Turf Paradise shipper, coming off a 4 month layoff with good consistent works at the track. This one should ride a pocket trip with a good late kick for this level, this one should hit the board with a good win potential.
  3. 4 Long Station – Claimed from Steve Asmussen (owner and trainer) 2 back, the move from Sam Houston to Canterbury should give this 9 year old Gelding a puncher’s chance. Won 2 back with Asmussen at $5k claiming at Sam Houston, this 69 race veteran has hit the board 42/69 tries, I won’t let this one beat me horizontally.

Race 8

5 Furlong Turf 3+ Claiming $7,500

  1. 2 Fender Bender – Claimed last out moving from dirt to turf shortening from 6 to 5 furlongs and moving up from $4k to $7,500 claimers. I don’t like this trainer, no wins in 34 tries in the last year, but this horse beat the morning line favorite last out on the dirt so I take a chance here that this horse has found itself in it’s 5 year old campaign.
  2. 7 Samuari Mike – A Cantebury turf specialist of sorts, I don’t like this one first out to win, but hitting the board seems very logical, hoping to float up off the morning line with so many here having raced recently, this 5 year old should be ok off the layoff and hit the board. I’m making a note to play next out over the turf if he fires in this spot.
  3. 1. Ferllin Husky – Moving from synthetic at Turway to the turf here, has had a good 2020 placing in his 2 races thus far. The shortening of distance, moving to the turf and getting the rail, may give this 9 year old gelding a sneaky shot at 6/1 morning line.
