Race 1-
1st #9 A Dime For Me seems like much the best in this field. She’s a filly by Make Music For Me, who was a successful racehorse, but a flop as a stallion. This is her fifth race, and I hope they consider putting her back on the turf in the future.
#7 Incredibly Lucky seems as if she is tempting to take on top since her connections are doing well at this meet. I am reluctant to do that because her works don’t show much positivity, and it’s her first out as a four year old.
2nd #8 Meritocracy should be better at this distance, I think last out was just a little short for her. She has also raced against A Dime For Me a couple back. She does struggle to catch her opponents, she comes late, and was close for third last out.
Race 2-
1st #5 Eddie Haskell is a solid fella. He’s six years old with only eighteen races, so I guess at his age he would be considered lightly raced. The point of that is, he’s only been off the board five times and just loves the California tracks- especially Del Mar.
2nd #7 Pee Wee Reese would be fair to take on top…. If, he had an out. It’s a little risky to run a horse who was likely injured and off for seven months, and throw him in a stakes race. He is a very nice horse, don’t get me wrong, but I just think he’s going to need an out.
3rd #2 Brandothebartender is also another one who could need an out, he hasn’t raced since the last day of 2018. I think the later half of last year, he really showed what he could do and has excelled. A total steal of a deal for the $40,000 he was claimed for in August.
Race 3-
1st #8 Lovely Raquel gets the little bit of a class drop she needs. I am under the sense a new career would be ideal? Scat Daddy mares are great for breeding. She’s had a good amount of layoffs and not a huge desire in racing, but maybe the class drop will help.
2nd #7 Heloise ran third by half a length last out. Even four back with a bad break and not much of an opportunity for distance, she did rally for a nice second place. The daughter of Richard’s Kid is seeking her second win.
3rd #1 Jeweled might be worth a look. The daughter of Sidney’s Candy was claimed from Bob Baffert after she broke her maiden last March by ten lengths, but hasn’t won since then. This is just a mare who needs a little confidence.
Race 4-
1st #1 Conquest Tsunami is one who for sure belongs on top. He is a California king, and ran so well in Dubai last year. His last race was an impressive one, and he had even ran eight days before that. He’s just got a lot of energy and loves his job.
2nd #2 Law Abidin Citizen typically goes head-to-head with Conquest Tsunami, but has never beat him. When he ran second in the San Vincente two years ago, he could have been pretty close to Derby stardom. Still runs impressive Beyer numbers too.
3rd #4 Cistron has definitely reached the peak of his career with the quality of competition he has raced and his trainer John Sadler is having a great meet. He’s only won three races and yet he’s made over $340,000. I don’t see him winning but being close.
Race 5-
1st #6 Owning was a spendy purchase at $260,000, and then gelded later on before he started racing. At first, he was well in over his head. Now he’s in a better spot.
2nd #2 Wild Bean had a nice maiden breaking trip last out. He likes to go to the lead, last out he kicked clear. The extra half a furlong could help him or not.
3rd #7 Toothless Wonder gets a class drop and blinkers on. He really needed some changes. Doug O’Neill trains the three year old colt who was a $220,000 purchase.
Race 6-
1st #9 My Man Chuckles is an Into Mischief gelding trained by Baltas and ridden by Geovanni Franco. He ran a respectable third last out in a waiver claiming race here at Santa Anita.
2nd #5 Blitzkrieg has won two out of three races this year. The last win was pretty darn impressive, as it was over six lengths on the turf in a starter allowance race.
3rd #4 Eric the Trojan had a good year last year, and his last race out wasn’t bad. He lost by two and a quarter. In a tough allowance race. I think the two above will be tough for him but we will see.
Race 7-
1st #6 Big Barrel has four starts and has ran second twice. His last race wasn’t any good sadly, he lost has rider at the start. This is his first race since the second week of November, so he may need an out.
2nd #4 Golden Birthday really surprised everyone last out going off at odds of 29-1. Espinoza gets the mount, maybe he can run another second or better.
3rd #3 Summer Games just worked a bullet as he makes his career debut. This is a gelding by Unusual Heat, and the first starter by the dam, Sunburn.
Race 8-
1st #10 S Y Gold with Geovanni Franco is a practically perfect California bred-mare. She’s got ten races, five wins, four seconds and a third. At five years old, she’s almost near half a million in earnings. Can’t wait to see what she keeps doing.
2nd #2 Queen Bee To You was my top choice last out and she certainly didn’t disappoint. She’s only been off the board six times out of twenty four races. She’s got ten second places, (perfect pick for second place!) but she’s always a game mare who tries, and loves Santa Anita. Beyer numbers are the best they’ve been.
3rd #5 Gypsy Blu may not be as fast as the two I chose on top, but I remember choosing her last out too and she didn’t disappoint. Out of seven races, four wins is pretty respectable. She just isn’t as experienced as them. Lightly raced for her age.
Race 9-
1st #6 Awesome Amanda has a second place finish on Valentine’s Day, and that’s it for this year so far. Dan Blacker trains.
2nd #5 Caracortada is five years old, and making her first start. The only reason I’d trust taking her here is because Peter Miller trains her. She should be race ready.
3rd #2 Crackling Bread is a Morning Line filly who has fifteen starts. And still a bridesmaid. Five seconds and three thirds. She has two third place finishes this year, we know she is reliable for third.
