G3 Iroquois Review By Andrew Rdesinski

Iroquois G3 REVIEW

  1. Zyramid- Santana Jr/Asmussen

–  My top pick ran the exact opposite of how I expected him too. Instead of pulling the upset and winning he ran last and never showed any sign of life. He sat right off the pace for the first half mile, and then just flattened out on the rail and by the stretch he was empty. Probably a cheap ALW one turn type horse in the future.

  1. Letmeno- Borel/ Wilkes
  • Letmeno was a horse usually closer to the pace that for some reason was dead last for the majority of the race and made his move come the stretch run. I don’t know the reasoning for the trip Borel gave him but it was definitely a head scratcher. He closed well for 4th but it was a little too much too late.
  1. Scabbard- Lanerie/ Kenneally

–  Scabbard was the horse I would take out of this race. He was mid pack but close the whole way around and had a really strong turn of foot halfway down the stretch. Although he wasn’t going to catch Dennis’ Moment he still ran the best race not including the winner’s performance. Strong 2yo right here.

  1. Rowdy Yates- Baze/ Asmussen
  • Rowdy Yates didn’t make the lead and was basically flat the whole trip. 5th place finish and was never better than midpack the whole race. One run type of horse who needs the lead in order to win.
  1. Automate- Geroux/ Desormeaux
  • This horse was just outclassed. He basically walked out of the gate and never threatened.
  1. Flute Maker- J. Ortiz/ McPeek
  • I still think this horse is more of a turf horse. He was bumped at the start and that resulted in him being 7th consistently all the way around.
  1. Juggernaut- Graham/ Desormeaux
  • Juggernaut tried to go gate to wire and steal the race but by the ¾ pole he was tired after setting strong fractions. He ended up being next to last by the finish line. Definitely a one turn horse.
  1. Dennis’ Moment- I. Ortiz Jr/ Romans
  • This horse right here is the best 2yo in the country so far. He galloped around the leaders going into the stretch, and was geared down coming to the wire. He answered all of my questions and was impressive in doing so.
  1. Lebda- McCarthy/ Gonzalez
  • Lebda was the horse that surprised me the most. This Mid Atlantic shipper, pressed the pace all the way around, and still held for 3rd. McCarthy got the most out of him, and I want to see how he does off of this effort.
  1. January Won- Hernandez Jr./ McPeek
  • He improved late, but it was more of passing tired rivals for me. He was dead last or close to last the whole trip and when he came off the rail he moved up the field and finished 6th. I think he still has a ton of room for improvement and I want to see how he does in the future. Possible 3yo star.

All in all it was a one horse race. Dennis’ Moment is the best of the already run 2yo crop at this point in the season. However, Scabbard, Lebda, and January Won are all horses I want to see in the future improve. I think this field was filled with 1 turn horses and early speed type horses as well. Is there a Derby winner in the field, possibly. However, no Derby winner ever won the Iroquois too.
