Del Mar Stakes Preview — G1 Matriarch — Saturday, November 30, 2019, by Andrew Rdesinski

I can see this race coming down to who gets the cleanest trip. #7 Got Stormy is a classy horse and one who sits right off the pace. Some pacesetters are #5 Toinette, #10 Giza Goddess, and #11 Juliet Foxtrot. A super classy race should lead to an exciting finish and I’m hoping my analysis helps. Good Luck!

  1. Storm the Hill- Rafael Bejarano- Phil D’Amato

Storm the Hill, isn’t the same horse has 2018. The problem with this horse is the lack of consistency, especially when it comes to run style. She also seems to fit more in the Grade 3 or Non-Graded stakes company rather than a Grade 1 company. The inside post going a flat mile with a stretch start, won’t help her either. I will be fading this horse in all wagers.

  1. Lakerball- Evin Roman-Doug O’Neill

Lakerball is another small stake horse jumping up to unknown territory for herself. Doug O’Neill usually puts his horses in the right spots but this one is a head scratcher. She has yet to run since April in which she ran a lackluster effort at Golden Gate. The fact that I think she is outclassed and she is coming off of a huge layoff I will have to fade her today.

  1. Significant Form- John Velazquez- Chad Brown

Significant form is truly living up to her name currently has she is in impeccable form coming into this race. She hasn’t run in a few months but Chad Brown does this from time to time when he points certain horses to certain races. Today is one of those occasions, and I think the fact that John Velazquez is coming out to ride it, shows just how big time this horse is. I like this horse a lot today and is a must use.

  1. Mucho Unusual- Abel Cedillo- Tim Yakteen

Abel Cedillo is a talented rider and gets aboard a talented filly out of Mucho Macho Man. She ran with an early pace type of runstyle early on in her career and then transitioned over to a closer. The pace was on dirt and once she went to turf she had a great turn of foot down the stretch. I think she is in great form and Abel should be loaded down the stretch with this filly.

  1. Toinette- Flavien Prat- Neil Drysdale

Toinette is one of two Drysdale entries that are actually lined up right next to each other. I think Toinette is the better of the two and that is why Prat is on this one. Prat has ridden both before and fell in love with this one more than the other. She is coming into form but this will be her biggest test to date and I am not quite sure she can step up. She ran a real good race beating her stablemate last time out, and today they are lined up together so maybe she just runs better with her stablemate in the race. I like her in horizontals but not so much as a top pick.

  1. Simply Breathless (GB)- Drayden Van Dyke- Neil Drysdale

Simply Breathless is a solid 4yo filly but seems to be a bit of a hanger. Last time out she might have won though however, Joel Rosario lost the whip at the 1/16th pole and she finished 2nd. Drayden gets the mount today instead and that might be a big factor. She is coming in 3rd off the layoff with improved finishes so maybe today is the day.

  1. Got Stormy- Tyler Gaffalione- Mark Casse

Got Stormy is a gutsy horse that has run at about every major racetrack in North America. Today however, is her first start at Del Mar, which is a huge thing. Del Mar is a beautiful course but not every horse runs well on it. However, Got Stormy is a classy horse and a proven one at that. Gaffalione goes wherever this filly goes, and he is here today to ride her. I like her as my top choice to get it done coming off the pace.

  1. Painting Corners- Paco Lopez- Peter Miller

This speedy Peter Miller horse seems to want the lead early and with Paco aboard she should get that today. There isn’t much early pace signed on for today, so Paco could get an easy lead which could be deadly. Paco is aggressive so I expect the horse to be sent and class won’t be a worry if she goes gate to wire.

  1. Daddy is a Legend- Manuel Franco- George Weaver

This George Weaver trainee seems to be more of an Allowance horse or small stakes horse at this point in her career. She hasn’t been able to get the job done in stakes races this year, but she had a tune up race last time out in an ALW race in which she dominated. Likes Del Mar which is a positive and Franco ships in to ride. I like underneath but she will have to beat me in horizontals.

  1. Giza Goddess- Brice Blanc- John Shirreffs
    1. Giza Goddess should be sent early today with Brice Blanc aboard. She won’t get an easy lead today however, but she should be contesting the early pace. She is outclassed and I just don’t trust Brice Blanc enough to have this filly step up in class.
  2. Juliet Foxtrot (GB)- Florent Geroux – Brad Cox
    1. Juliet Foxtrot is the speed of the speed and breaking from the 11 hole, she should be sent immediately. Florent Geroux knows this horse really well, and knows how much she has left in the tank when he is aboard her turning for home. If no one else really battles her on the backstretch I can see her going gate to wire. However, if she doesn’t break on top, she will be swung wide in the first turn. Will use in horizontals.
