Laurel Park Racing Analysis- Jan. 15, 2021, by Chris Woods

Race 1: MdClm $40k 3 Year Old Fillies 1M

1st: #2 Moonsafe, probably the second choice in the betting after Brittany/Sheldon’s debuter, this one showed some decent run in her most recent though the Beyer dip is concerning. Trombetta is throwing the kitchen sink at her with first Lasix and blinkers today, hopefully that does the trick. Enough to warrant the nod over a debuting favorite.

2nd: #5 Luminist, Brittany/Sheldon’s debuter bred by William Farish by Tonalist out of a Kitten’s Joy mare but she was only purchased for $3,500 so she must have had physical issues. Brittany has gaudy numbers with debuting MdClmers, but not willing to take her on top at even money or so.

3rd: #1 Expect the Sunrise, showed good speed in her second effort last out but faded badly.

Race 2: SOC$25k F&M 6 & ½F

1st: #4 Union Song, there’s a lot of speed in this race coming from both her inside and outside. Shortens up a bit today which could be a problem but I do think the pace scenario sets up ideally for her to make one run from the back, much like her last out effort. Might even get a better price than the 6-1ML.

2nd: #1 Uno Tigress, will certainly take a good deal of money, has improving figures, just won in open allowance company now dropping back a tad in class but eligible for this because she hasn’t won three. She’s going to have to chase a strong pace much like the last two, think the competition on the front end in this one is strong enough to warrant a look elsewhere.

3rd: #3 Vic’s Cool Cat, muddy track probably accentuated that 8 length win last out, but I love Mark Reid going higher quality off a good race, moves up from Clm$14k to $25k tag in here today.

Race 3: MdSpWt $40k 3 Year Old Fillies 6F

1st: #4 Elevator Shaft, unfortunately a no-doubter odds-on type from the Brittany/Sheldon barn for Madaket Stables. Ran a great race in her debut at Aqu in open MdSpWt company last month rallying from 8th to third to lose by only a length. Adds Lasix for the first time, no brainer. Take your 4-5 and move on.

2nd: #2 Likely Choice, intrigued by the shift from Pimentel to Carol Cedeno for this one who adds Lasix for Kelly Rubley. Honest debut effort, will improve.

3rd: #6 Paradise Song, also debuted at Aqu, faded badly, looks like a bleeding job. Lasix would cure that.

Race 4: OC$35k 1 & 1/16thM

1st: #6 Gracetown, what happened last out that he took the lead going a mile early with strong fractions (24, 47.8) and not looking back at 16-1? His best races have all come on or very near the front and there’s not much speed in this race. Sheldon is going to have to use some early speed to make the front going into that quick first turn from the 6 post, will be good to clear the field.

2nd: #4 Pat’s No Fool, a couple races he’s made the 70s in terms of Beyer, a quick break since October will probably do him wells, he’s been training pretty well including a bullet 5F work last out. One late run type of horse.

3rd: #2 Daphne Moon, lightly raced Englehart shipper is likely to take the most money, I want no part of him at that price. Very inconsistent horse and going in the wrong direction at the moment. Last time he came to Laurel at this level he was 8-5 and finished 4 lengths behind.

Race 5: Clm $10k 7F

1st: #2 Pay the Kid, lightly raced gelding just broke his maiden in thw two back going this distance over a fast track. First against winners was going a mile over the mud and he didn’t handle it. Return to distance and given a fast track again should play to his strengths.

2nd: #4 Catch Ya Later Bro, improving, slight class drop, back class as he won his maiden at the $40k level.

3rd: #7 Point Driven, likely post time favorite off some strong Beyer numbers, 1 for 12 lifetime with 1 second. Drops in class again.

Race 6: Clm $5k 1 & 1/8thM

1st: #2 He’s Zipping On By, 2 wins in his last 3 starts and both came at two turns at this claiming level. Earlier in the summer was competitive in allowance fields at Pen. Looks like the one that wants 9 furlongs the most in this field.

2nd: #1 Empty Nestr, made up a ton of ground in his last effort coming from 14 lengths back to win. 4 of his last 5 have all been solid. Hard to trust this type, but maybe 9F is up his wheelhouse to pass tiring horses. No data on the trainer, not sure about that one but does get Alex Cintron to ride.

3rd: #6 Charging Lion, one of the most honest claimers on the mid Atlantic circuits. Lets see how he handles 9F.

Race 7: Alw $42k F&M 1M

1st: #1 Yesterdaysplan, gets the nod despite the bad rail draw having won 3 of her last 4 against increasing quality fields most recently SOC$16k locally earning a 77 Beyer. The last was another step up in class and she didn’t handle it although maybe it was the slop she didn’t care for. Has 7 wins over this track.

2nd: #6 Ski Bunny, 3 for her last 4 including a 70 Beyer last out against SOC$25k types.. Might prefer two turns.

3rd: #4 Lookin Dynamic, one that likes to hit the board for Trombetta/Cintron, hard to trust and may prefer turf a little more, but both her wins came on dirt.

Race 8: Clm $5k F&M 5 & ½F

1st: #5 Sevilla Sangria, horse keeps dropping in class and finally arrives at the bottom level $5k. Top apprentice Alexander Crispin gets the ride and the thought here is that Crispin will know to put this horse on the front end where her best performances have come. 5lb weight allowance doesn’t hurt.

2nd: #6 Adabel, shown ability to make up lengths. There are a number of need the lead types in here which could set up for this one.

3rd: #7 Scamper Along, Ed Allard’s 5-2ML fav in here off an 8 length romp earning a 55 Beyer against maidens at Pen. Not sure about favoritism there.

Race 9: MdClm $10k 3 Year Olds 7F

1st: #9 Uncle Cecil, third time out for Lacey Gaudet after two middling efforts against Md$25k types. Small Beyer improvement from first to second is nothing to sneeze at, drops in for lowest maiden tag in Maryland, gets Lasix (like many of these) and retains the 7lb bug Labarre.

2nd: #4 Baltinglass, a rare Cols Neck Stables homebred that is training in Maryland with Ricardo D’Angelo instead of Jorge Duarte. His dam was a G2 winner and we all know Pioneerof the Nile’s record. Half sib to many winners, most of their success on turf. Strange to see him start up for sale for only $10k with such breeding. Must be a sign they don’t think much of him.

3rd: #5 Shepherd’s Will, two fair starts at the MdSpWt level at Pen, first time with Hugh McMahon here at Laurel, a couple of bullet drills didn’t translate to success on the track previously.
